He shook his head again. "Just a lot of noise." |

"Screaming and growling." |

Matty put his shirt back on and they headed back out to the lobby. Tojian explained that he and Matty had had a good talk, that he had examined him and taken another blood sample. Then he led them down the hall to the elevators and up to the fifth floor, where the MRI would be done. They were met by an endocrinologist with whom Mitch would consult and the radiologist and nurse who would administer the imaging. |

Terry kissed Matty as he was led into the MRI room. Through the window they could see the huge machine and the table where Matty would lie and have his head inserted in the small opening. Mitch had asked for a full workup of Matty's brain and adrenal glands. The procedure would take about half an hour. |

Nobody was allowed in the imaging room with patients, so Terry stayed in the viewing antechamber just to reassure Matty that she was nearby. |

Mitch would have remained with her, but Calvin whispered that he wanted to speak to him privately. As an excuse, he told her he would bring back coffees for all of them. They headed down the hall and back to the conference room. |

When Mitch closed the door, Calvin said, "I think Matty killed our cat." |
|
|

|
Mitch listened grimly as Calvin described the backyard the previous night and finding the paw in the toilet. |

|

"And you don't think it was wild animals." |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
He shook his head. "Her head was in the pool, as if it had been thrown there. Animals can't do that." |
|
|
|
|
|

|
"And you really think Matty . . . threw it up." |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
"I heard him, throwing up . . ." |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
"But that doesn't prove that he killed her and". . . struggling for the right words. . . "ate her. It's conceivable that he found what you did and brought in her paw. Tried unsuccessfully to flush it down the toilet, threw up at the horror of it all." |

|
|
|
"That's something I'd like to believe, Mitch." |

|
|
|

Tojian nodded. "Does Terry know?" |
